And a word from the Club Captain

The role of Club Captain is primarily concerned with all areas of senior competitive play, either in inter-club matches, the Club Championships or more informal internal tournaments.

An overview of these various activities is given below, which is an extract from the The Kite, Winter 2006 Newsletter.

For an insight into what this involves go to  Behind the Scenes.

The various documents  (Score Cards and Team Reports) needed by the Team Captains can be found in the page: Captain's Stuff

Inter- club Tournaments

We are now just over half way through the winter season and we have 14 teams competing:

  • 4 men’s and 3 ladies’ in the Thames Valley League
  • 1 men’s and 1 ladies’ in the Berkshire League
  • 2 mixed teams in the Cholsey Floodlit League
  • 3 mixed teams in the Portcullis Floodlit League.

Remember, interim tables and results can be seen either in the clubhouse or on this website.

The TVL teams have been competing for some years and enjoy competitive tennis. Highlights so far are:

The Men’s A is currently leading Division 1 and pushing hard for promotion to the Premier Division. Also the Ladies’ 1 is in second place in Division 1 (there is no premier division in the ladies competition) which is a further improvement on last year’s fourth place. Let’s hope they can keep it up!

The two Berkshire teams are holding their own although there have not been many matches played yet.

In the floodlit competitions both A teams are defending their titles and both B teams, having won the lower divisions last year, are finding life tough in the higher divisions. The new Portcullis C team is finding its feet in its first season.

Since the last newsletter we have held the usual autumn 8-team tournament, two Senior/Junior events (one in September, one on Christmas Eve) and three Ladies’ Social afternoons on Sundays with two more to come.

Ladies’ singles and doubles box leagues have been established for those who have little or no match play experience.

Club Tournaments

It is only this year that the responsibility for Tournaments has come under the Club Captain.

The 2005 Club Championships attracted 64 entrants over 10 events (compared to 48 entries in 7 events last year) and the introduction of tiered doubles events (building on the pilot introduced last year for the Mixed Doubles) has played its part in increasing numbers.

Finals’ Day was moved from September to July to be on the same day as the traditional Summer BBQ.

Internal Tournaments

Internal tournaments can take several forms from a straight Round Robin to the Handicap Hundred.

We also hold a Senior/Junior Tournament in September as part of the development of the better juniors and then finish off the summer with the traditional 8 Team Tournament as a prelude to the coming Winter Season.
