GTC 2005 Club Championships
Highlights of the Day
The 2005 Club Championships came to a close on Saturday 23rd July with the completion of ten finals in six events over more than five hours of highly competitive play, five of the ten matches going to three sets.
The idea to switch Finals’ Day from its September home of previous years seemed to prove popular to most, especially as we were able to take advantage of the clement July weather and combine the tennis in the afternoon with the traditional Summer Barbecue in the evening at which the presentations to the finalists were made.
The tournament attracted 64 entrants this year (a 33% increase on last year’s 48) and the tiered structure of the doubles events (piloted successfully in the Mixed Doubles last year) meant that 23 of the 64 entrants contested the finals and all squads, from D team to A team, were represented.
Another innovation for 2005 was the use of Ball Kids for the finals, expertly trained (and kitted out in matching caps and sweat bands) by Annabel W.
The order of play and the Results are shown on a separate page.
Whilst all this was going on the large and appreciative audience of members, friends and family gathered round all five courts was treated to the traditional refreshments of tea, sandwiches and cakes.
A big thank you from the Tournament Committee to all the players who, in the main, were able to stick to the scheduling. This in turn allowed the timetable for Finals’ Day to be published as early as possible to the competitors.
We hope you enjoyed the competition, the Finals’ Day tennis and the evening Barbecue.
We’d be happy to hear of any suggestions that anyone might have regarding next year’s championships.
Look forward to hearing from you and see you all next year!
