New Oak Benches for the Club kindly donated by Marjorie H’s family in her memory
The plaque reads "One Life - Live it". A sentiment I think my mother would relate to.
Sadly, she died earlier this year. Many club members knew Marjorie H and attended her funeral, which really was a 'Celebration for her Life'.
My mum made a great many friends at Goring Tennis Club. In 1996 she moved from Portsmouth to live closer to us, and joined the club as a social member, as she used to accompany me on Tuesday and Thursday morning club sessions. She said she came for some exercise; but I think it more likely that she enjoyed making connections with people. Marjorie always had a friendly smile and would chat with members whilst they waited for a game.
Whenever I arrived alone she was instantly missed, it was "Hello Carol - where's your Mum?"
My family wanted to make some reference to her life, and thought Goring Tennis Club would be a perfect place to remember her.
The committee agreed to two benches being placed on the clubhouse veranda. She would be pleased at the thought of Iain, her son-in-law making the benches; I know he is very happy with the result. The benches are now in place and I hope members will benefit from this facility at the clubhouse.
