Hunted as vermin, they almost became extinct in the British Isles. At one time they were confined entirely to a few areas in Wales, until a reintroduction scheme brought them back to many parts of England and Scotland.
Central Wales, the Black Isle in Scotland and central England, especially the Chilterns, are the best areas to find them.
Gerry Whitlow and Ian Carter have published an excellent small book about the Red Kite in the Chilterns, which is now in its second edition.
It can be purchased for a mere £4-00 from the site: http://web.onetel.net.uk/~gerrywhitlow/book.htm
There is a reference copy of the book kept in the clubhouse.
