Finals’ Day
Following on from a wet and windy Wimbledon, we had perfect weather for the 2007 Club Championships which came to a close on Saturday 14th July with the completion of eleven finals in seven events over almost six hours of highly competitive play.
With our usual finals day coinciding with the Goring & Streatley Regatta, we were forced to bring our date forward a week and therefore pack all the matches into a period shorter by one week. A blessing in disguise as it it turned out. Our commiserations to the Regatta.
This shorter period was especially tough in the Mixed Doubles which, being a three tiered event, gave only a fortnight per round. Not difficult you may think but with holidays, injuries, the weather, and other matches it was not as easy as it sounds. Nevertheless all the semi-finals, bar one, were completed by the Wednesday preceding the finals; the exception being one of Men’s Doubles semi-finals which was played the evening before.
In amongst the damp days we were blessed with a perfect day for tennis and a large number of spectators turned up to see the matches. The excellent weather lasted into the evening to allow celebration of the now traditional Summer Barbecue at which the presentations to the finalists were made.
Despite being able to introduce a Ladies restricted Singles for the first time the tournament attracted slightly fewer entrants than last year, but the tiered structure of the doubles events meant that 28 of the 54 entrants contested the finals and all squads, from D team to A team, were represented. The five Open (top tier) finals produced three new winners.
As in previous years we had a team of ball kids supporting the finals.
