Winter of Content

This is an extract from the May 2005 Newsletter covering last year’s winter leagues.

Over the winter season (2004-2005) we ran thirteen teams (two more than previous year) in four different competitions involving men’s, ladies’ and mixed doubles. We organised and played over 120 matches and almost 60 players represented the club during the various campaigns. This is a 20% increase in team players over last winter. The 2005-2006 fixtures for the Berkshire and Thames Valley Leagues are now published.

Floodlit Leagues

In an unprecedented campaign all four floodlit league teams (two at Cholsey and two at Portcullis) won their respective divisions. Congratulations to all who played.

Portcullis Floodlit League (mixed)

Division 1 and Nikki R’s ‘Gladiators’ was the last section to finish and it was a nail biting conclusion. With one match in hand a Portcullis team named Scatts trailed the Gladiators by two points. Needing to score only three points in their last match they failed to do so and presented Goring with the title.

Patricia K’s ‘Goodies’ won seven out of their eight matches and won their title by five points from Benson.

Cholsey Floodlit League (mixed)

Having won the Division 1 championship two seasons ago and having been pipped for the title by one set last year Jax M’s side regained the trophy and the shield is on display in the Clubhouse. Mary D’s team switched to the Cholsey League this year (to give us two teams in each competition) and carried all before them, winning 5 out of their 6 matches. Their shield is also in the Clubhouse.

Thames Valley League

The Ladies A team finished a really impressive 4th in Division 1, only being headed by the A teams from the three big Oxford clubs (North, Sports and City). This a tremendous result and a great improvement on last year’s 9th place finish.

The Men’s ‘A’ team comfortably held its own in Division 1 and was supported by a number of guest appearances from ‘B’ and ‘C’ team members all of whom performed creditably in the higher division. As last year the team finished fourth but with one more point and one less defeat than last year, we are improving!

Following last year’s story of promotion for four of our six teams this winter has been one of consolidation.

Of those promoted sides the best results were 4th place for Caroline B’s Ladies’ 2 team in Division 3 and 6th place for Sarah D’s Ladies’ 3 in Division 4.

Also promoted, the Men’s B and C teams led by John S / Ollie R and Peter H respectively will stay in their new divisions with creditable mid table finishes.

Jan-Paul K’s new Men’s D team finished a worthy 8th in Division 6 having blooded several players who had never played inter club match tennis before.

Berkshire League

At the time of going to press our final positions are still unknown. Watch the notice board for the final details.

The Men’s team, led by Ian B, having also been promoted last year, will finish mid table with a balanced record of three wins and three defeats.

This was our first season entering a Ladies’ team (captained by Jan B) in this competition and, like the Men’s ‘D’ team in the Thames Valley League, featured several ‘debutantes’ to league tennis.

General

If you have any questions or issues that you would like to raise to do with the club teams, or match play in general, please feel free to speak to me.

Finally my thanks to all the captains who do such a sterling job behind the scenes and to Barbara L who juggles courts, dates and rearrangements with quiet efficiency.
